Former police officer pleads guilty in federal sex case

By Robert K. Gordon -- The Birmingham News

September 21, 2009, 4:44PM
Ronald Whitworth, a former Vestavia Hills and Anniston police officer, was to go on trial in U.S. District Court at Birmingham on charges of possessing child pornography and transporting a minor from Alabama to Florida and Georgia for sex.

In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped two of the charges.

Whitworth will be sentenced Jan. 21 for transporting a minor to Georgia where he molested the girl, according to court records.

Whitworth faces at least 20 years in prison. He will be on supervised release for the rest of his life.

Whitworth was captured Aug. 18 in Lynnwood, Wash.

Whitworth’s sport utility vehicle was found July 31 at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport containing guns and a note that law enforcement would not find him.

I am the grandmother of a very precious little girl whose father raped and much much more to her. Two days ago he plead guilty in the Federal Court House and will receive 20 years of prison. He still has to face State charges. I am so upset about this horrible ordeal and I pray for my granddaughter daily; also her mother, my daughter. It is such a terrible thing that a father could do the things that he did to this little girl and it hurts so bad. I actually thought that was bad enough but her grandparents, (father's mother and dad) deny and are upholding what their son did to their grandchild. She told them everything that happened to her over a year ago and they told her they have no idea what she is talking about. I am very upset that they would condone the deviant act their son did. I am really putting this into words because I hurt so much for my granddaughter. She has been hurt so much and she is in therapy and has been for over a year now. She has all my family members and her mother and stepfather who are both really good parents and I know she will be okay; but it does take time. Her father will be sentenced in January and I really hope he gets more jail time when the state is finished. I do not think 20 years is enough but it does give some closure for my granddaughter. Pray for her and her mother and all the family including me.
