“Giving Up Time in the Pews for Time With the Crews”

Relief efforts are under way around the world as the storm and disaster seasons set in. Locally, the “Stormin’ Mormons” are at it again this Saturday October 3. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from all over the metro area are descending upon Cobb and Douglas County to help wherever they can. Wearing mostly yellow Mormon Helping Hands t-shirts, they come, they labor, they leave things better than they found them.

Last Sunday, in an effort to provide immediate emergency relief for flood victims, 400 volunteers were expected but about 1,000 volunteers showed up, leaving the church in droves, "giving up time in the pews for time with the crews". They organized and grouped themselves into teams, were given a work order, found the site and the homeowner who requested the help, and went to work tearing out wet and moldy sheetrock, dumping ruined furniture at the street for later pick up, shoveling, scraping, and washing mud, debris, and mold off everything imaginable.

Mormon volunteers worked alongside FEMA who was assessing damages, and members of other churches including Jehovah’s Witnesses, local Baptist congregations, The Salvation Army, and Samaritan's Purse. Volunteers from these organizations will be working together again this Saturday.

Last Sunday, the Mormon volunteers and their friends met at the command center at the Goodwill parking lot in Marietta to sign in and receive work orders, then dispersed throughout neighborhoods in Powder Springs. It will happen much the same this Saturday Oct 3, except there will be two command centers for volunteers to sign in; one in Marietta and one in Douglasville

If you are a media representative interested in featuring your local volunteers from your circulation area, either check in with the command center to locate your local volunteers or call Mindy Terry at the Cobb County location 678-642-8001 or Dena Brett at the Douglas County location 770-842-4752.

If you would like to capture a photo of the full crowd, be at the Goodwill Parking lot in Marietta or the Saturn Dealership in Lithia Springs listed below at 8:00 a.m.
