iReport —
After being hit with tornados two weeks ago, Northeast Iowa is being deluged with record rainfall and flooding. NEW HARTFORD, IOWA Location: 20 miles Northwest of Waterloo County: Butler Population: 659 Two weeks ago the northern part of New Hartford was demolished by an EF5 tornado. Sunday a mandatory evacuation was ordered for New Hartford due to a levee break that flooded the southern, eastern and most of the western parts of the city. For the safety of the evacuating residents, MidAmerican Energy shut off all gas and electricity to the city. A Red Cross shelter for the evacuees was opened on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Beaver Creek’s flood stage at New Hartford is 10.0 feet. It crested Sunday afternoon at 15.43 feet and is currently back below flood stage. JANESVILLE, IOWA (see photos above) Location: 15 miles North of Waterloo (33 miles due to water over the road detours) County: Bremer Population: 829 The Cedar River in Janesville rose to new record levels. The old record was set in 1999 at 17.15 feet. Flood stage is 11.00 feet. The river gauge last reported the river level at 16.93 feet and rising before it quit reporting. The residents of Janesville came together in the true Iowa fashion of neighbor helping neighbor. Sand bags were filled and transported to the areas in need. The children were able to help with the sand bagging too. Janesville First Responder made sure everyone stayed hydrated. In the rural areas south of Janesville, Janesville Fire and Rescue evacuated four people by boat, including an eighteen month old baby. They were assisted by the Janesville Police. A Janesville School bus was used to transport evacuees. Police Chief Randy Samec commented that in his nine years with the police department he has never seen flooding as bad as it has been this year. Strong storms are predicted for the area the rest of this week. Part Two - http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-34977
