Today, when she is asked to speak to various groups including school groups, she often is asked what it was like growing up Hispanic American. She says that her experience was not all that different from other teenagers growing up in the 1950s. She listened to Elvis and Rock n’ Roll. She was a cheerleader. And, she was part of a family aspiring to live the American Dream – the same aspiration of so many other Americans.
