Highmore South Dakota, got it's name from being the highest point between Chicago and the Missouri river. It has been a ranching and farming community since the 1800's. The people here are descendants of the original homesteaders. They each received 160 acres for free in the 1800's. Generation after generation remain in this small town, population approximately 851.
