CNN producer note

Pixel conducted this interview while visiting South Dakota. She told me, 'The concerns of Barry reflect the concerns of the people throughout this community. Hard working folks trying to break even and care for their family as many Americans are today.'

iReport —

Highmore South Dakota, got it's name from being the highest point between Chicago and the Missouri river. It has been a ranching and farming community since the 1800's. The people here are descendants of the original homesteaders. They each received 160 acres for free in the 1800's. Generation after generation remain in this small town, population approximately 851.

The agriculture here is corn, wheat, millet, sunflower seeds, and soy beans. The majority of the livestock here is beef rather than dairy cows. I spoke with Barry Alger on the effect of our countries economic state on famers and the community. The best they can wish for at this point is to break even. The strength of the pioneer spirit  is evident in this small Ranching and farming community.
