Burning Life, Second Life's answer to Burning Man, has ended and this weekend the builds there are coming down, but with a twist. Following tradition, many of the creators are messing with their own creations, in some cases partially dismantling them, in other cases mangling them or setting them ablaze. You can see the remaining builds and what the builders have done to them this weekend only. After that, Burning Life 2009 will vanish into history.

These photographs are of just a few of the outstanding builds and events of Burning Life 2009.

Picture #1: Burning of the Man. Burning Life officially ends with the burning of The Man

Picture #2: The Temple Burn is another event that marks the end of festivities. The Temple was an elaborate gossamer structure in which people could leave their wishes. The burning was a festive affair, like the Man Burn, with Lamplighters drumming and everyone dancing.

Picture #4: OhMy Shalala's build in Burning Life-Limbo, delicate stained glass-like petals of a flower reaching for the sky.

Picture #5: 1Earthling Rang's  build in Burning Life-Quinn. Visitors are immersed in video.

Picture #6: Shad Raffke's giant scorpion in Burning Life-Elko.

Picture #7: Madcow Cosmos' musical serpents in Burning Life-Bordello.

Picture #8: Penelope Parx's crystalline hands in Burning Life-Nightingale, a silent protest by this Italian jeweler against the insistence of so many Second Life residents on using voice rather than typed text, a burden on many whose first language is not English.

Picture #9: Tokyo Stage, where many events were held, in Burning Life-Paiute.

Picture #10: Burning Life Rangers are one of the traditions carried over from Nevada's Burning Man, and serve many of the same functions. In this picture, ranger Iknow Tomorrow watches a Burning Life greeter.

Most of these builds are now gone or are mangled; Second Life members can visit the locations by opening the Map and entering the Burning Life region name specified above for each picture.
