Hundreds of children, from the Medford Area Middle School, lined the street to welcome a very important wall into their town. All week this school is honoring the service and sacrifices of many. This parade was shown to millions. Great job Medford Middle School!
The Wall That Heals & the Traveling Museum will be on display until November 15, 2009. Opening ceremonies will take place at 8:30 A.M. on November 11, 2009.
Bryce Kelley, a Social Studies teacher at the school, shared that he and other volunteers have worked on bringing this to Medford, Wisconsin, for 3 years.
According David W. Thomas, CVSO, “A lot of work has been done by Medford Middle School students to highlight the biographies of many of the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans who were killed in the war”. These will also be on display at the grounds where the Wall will be displayed.
Bryce shared with us the following "Over the past three years many people have been involved in bringing "The Wall That Heals" to Medford. The origins of the project began at the Medford Area Middle School and included myself, and fellow social studies teachers Justin Hraby and Sara Holewinski. It also included our Principal Al Leonard and assistant Principal Charles Heckel. Once we had an outline of what our goal was we invited other school employees and Medford citizens to join our planning committee. Other school employees include Don Grant, Deanna Hartman, Libby Orth, Eunice Mayer, Becky Risch, Bill Dallas, Gloria Lindahl, Julie Scott, and Jill Fortin.
When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the positive power of "The Wall." He vowed to share that experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington.
