As the Holidays Approach, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and The Moreno Valley PD held a DUI Checkpoint In Moreno Valley, CA, On Nov 6, 2009. The most moving part of this piece was the actual car of a MADD menber's son who was killed by a drunk that was 3 times over the limit...More Below:

Ryan Smith, age 20, was driving his Acura Intergra in Palm Desert, California at 9:45 p.m. and was taking his 15 year old sister, her friend and another 20 year old male home.  That same evening, the defendant spent several hours that drinking at an Applebee's Restaurant in Cathedral City and was asked to leave the premises for causing a disturbance.  He drove his friend home, traveling on Interstate 10.  Four witnesses called the police to report the defendant's high rate of speed of approximately 120 mph.  He exited at Washington Street.  Witnesses reported that defendant ran a red light at Country Club Drive and Harris while continuing to drive at a high rate of speed.. He crashed into Ryan Smith's vehicle at the intersection of Washington and Hovely Street in the City of Palm Desert.  The plaintiff was fatally injured from the accident, while his three passengers were critically injured but lived.

The defendant had four prior DUI convictions and was driving on a suspended license.  He tried to run from the scene from was apprehended by police.  His blood alcohol level was .23%.  He was tried and convicted of 2nd degree murder and was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison.
