A large crowd of loyal Sarah Palin followers, late arrivers, and "Going Rogue" book readers gathered outside the Roanoke, Virginia's Barnes and Noble book store to try to catch a glimpse of Sarah at 12:45 Sunday, November 22 as she finalized her book signing to depart on her unmistakable well equipped touring bus. B&N workers had told late arriving hopefuls outside, that if they had not pre-purchased the book and/or didn't have their receipt, they probably would not get in the line, moving steadily past the charismatic and bubbly Palin beginning at 10 am. The good natured Roanokers, typical of this laid back southern town in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, took it all in stride and said they would wait their turn and hope for the best. Local media had publicized instructions days before her scheduled appearance.
Snippets of conversation could be heard from the people outside in the crowd, excited that they had gotten close to her with her family at the local Red Robin restaurant, or as she had warmly greeted them and exuberantly shook hands in true girl - next - door Sarah fashion. Many had followed her from other city tours, and wore Palin supporter garb, like the "Palin Man," clearly dubbing him the most exuberant supporter a politician could ever hope for. Or author. The group proudly exhibited their support for her election next time around.
State and local police were on hand to thwart any potential problems as she was uneventfully yet quickly rushed from the B&N doorway and onto the bus to join the rest of her family there and depart to the next stop. Daughter Piper Palin snapped photos of the crowd from inside the bus. And baby Trig, frequently seen tucked in mom's arms just took it all in, smiling and mesmerized by the chatter and camera flashes. While the Roanokers stayed behind to discuss their undying support and share the prior day's experiences with the unforgettable and controversial Sarah, in a flash, the bus doors closed and she was driven away, escorted by flashing red lights and sirens. Out of Roanoke and on to a surprise stop in Ashevill, NC to grab a last minute dinner with the Rev. Billy Graham before going on to her Ft. Bragg, NC book signing scheduled for Monday.
