600 pound Leatherback turtle rescued
January 5, 2010 | Bonita Springs, Florida | Vetting explained
Big Hickory Island had quite the surprise when a giant 600 pound injured Leatherback turtle was swimming around in circles near the coast of Bonita Springs Florida this morning. Paul Stancati, an employee of Lee County’s Division of Natural Resources Marine program and co-worker of mine was at the island operating the boat and crane which hoisted the turtle into a truck. The turtle is said to be around 40 years and will be taken to Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota Florida.
Working for the Division of Natural Resources continues to be very rewarding especially when I get to see and hear about the good deeds our division is doing for our environment and local wildlife.
