LOST: The Final Season Premieres with More Questions
February 3, 2010 | Lake Forest, California | Vetting explained
At long last, the epic event that caused President Obama to reschedule his State of the Union address finally premiered.
It started with an hour's worth of recap material which is always refreshing and unlocks some of the questions you struggle with as you watch throughout the seasons. I love LOST for always keeping us focused and getting us re-energized before the big event (not that we haven't been waiting with bated breath).
Today's episode showed Jack in his seat on Oceanic Flight 815. He wasn't on the ground, he wasn't on the island, and as a viewer you're thinking oh wow, it really worked! Juliet was able to detonate the bomb. Now what? But before we can grapple with those questions or come to any conclusions, we find ourselves back on the island, Kate wakes up and is swinging from a tree and like true LOST fashion - more questions emerge and before we can ask them the story moves forward and you realize the bomb has indeed exploded but it caused some sort of ripple, a wrinkle in time, a parallel universe. The characters are leading identical lives on and off the island.
Are you LOST yet? Because hold on, there's more. A third story line takes us back where Locke leads Ben into Jacob's secret hide out and asks him to kill Jacob. After he succeeds, he asks Ben to ask Richard to come in and meet him. As Ben walks back out, he learns that Locke is dead and the man that had him kill Jacob is not who he says he is. So who is he?
As the show progresses, we learn the fake persona that has taken on Locke's identity is a darker, more sinister part of the island - the black smoke monster.
The two hour premiere has left its audience in yet another fog. A disappointment for me was that Juliet was found alive in the shaft but later dies in Sawyer's arms. By now, I guess I should get used to my favorite characters meeting an untimely death. I was also shocked that they were going to kill off Sayid but when he's taken to the temple on the request of Jacob (who appears to Hugo - and tells him about his death) he is drowned in the spring's water in an effort to be saved but as the show ends, he is miraculously alive! More questions? You bet.
I can only hope they all get answered in the remaining few episodes.
