Virginia Beach, Virginia // embed media
Many may find this hard to believe, but more people have died in tropical storms in some cases than in hurricanes. Why? Because alot of tropical storms and depressions carry alot of rain with them as well as storm surge, which is the #1 killer of tropical systems. Tropical Storm Ernesto, which struck Virginia Beach on September 3rd 2006, gave us our highest rainfall totals on record in a 24-hour-period, with a measured 12.54 inches of rain. Most neighborhoods were flooded, not just from the torrential rains, but the 6 ft. storm surge brought in by the low pressure of the tropical storm, which brought more than double the rainfall that Hurricane Isabel brought back in September of 2003. Ernesto's winds gusted to around 74 mph at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
In response to assignment: Severe weather
