Sparky & The Goose
July 15, 2008 | Hampton, Iowa | Vetting explained
I had the chance in one year to meet both of my favorite baseball players back in 1999. Sparky Lyle, the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award and Rich "Goose" Gossage, recent Hall of Fame inductee. Both pitchers have been my heroes since I was a kid. Sparky was humored when my grandma wouldn't let me chew tobacco like Sparky, but she let me put in a big wad of shredded coconut. It was also amazing to shake hands with one of the most feared pitchers of his day, Goose Gossage and really see what a gentle person he could be. I got their autographs both on a personalized baseball bat and on a "home plate" plaque I had made. It was an honor to meet them both and it made my year. I have a baseball bat that sports around 20 autographs of former Yankee baseball players.
