The Collapse of History
The American Hotel, built in 1835 and a landmark for Confederate
soldiers entering the prisoner of war camp, was destroyed today by
the City of Elmira.
The building, long ignored by it's present owner, had numerous code issues. Just prior to the demolition, the front bowed out approximately 4 1/2 inches, and stress fractures could be seen in the windows.
The city barricaded the property approximately a month ago, as brickwork started to fall off the back of the building. They state they could no longer wait to make contact with the owner, and will be taking legal action to recoup the costs of the demolition.
