1965
July 26, 2008 | Bloomington, Minnesota | Vetting explained
I met Willie Mays, sorta, at the 1965 All star game at Metropolitan stadium in Bloomington Minnesota when I was 12 years old. It was late in the game and the sun was so hot that my cousin and I went under the out field bleachers to get in the shade. In those days there was no baggie on the outfield fences, simply a chain link fence. The fence came down to a cement curb like base which we sat on sorta sideways while we clung to the fence and watched the game in left center. A deep fly ball was hit towards us and Willie came running to field it. He caught the ball just as he hit the chain link fence on a dead run. I was right there. He hit me square knocking me for a loop. The next day in the newspaper there's a picture of Willie hitting the fence and just behind him in the shadow is me as I got the stuffing knocked out of me.
