iReport —
Amityville, New York. Jerry Asher continued his 10,000 mile journey today as he arrived on Long Island in his Plug-In Hybrid Electric Prius conversion. "EVJerry" as he is known, shared dinner at a local Applebee's restaurant with members of the Long Island chapter of the Electric Auto Association. Asher is on a quest to educate the public about plug-in vehicles and the power of electricity in automobile transportation. "You have a choice", Asher said confidently, "Pump in or plug in. The public needs to know this." To date Jerry has been traveling for 49 days making stops in more than a dozen states. Asher's route will take him through all 50 states by the time he completes his journey. He and the "Spirit of DC" team is planning on averaging 101 MPG in 101 days. The Prius conversion is an after market modification in which twenty additional battery packs have been added in order to supplement its electric vehicle operation. The standard Prius can get 45 - 50 miles per gallon. The conversion allows it to reach over 100 miles per gallon with plug-in charging. After dinner some of the members recieved a ride in the Prius. "This technology is practical.", said Jon Lorber a member of the Long Island Electric Automobile Association, "The more that people become aware of EV technology the more demand there will be for it. More demand and purchases will result in more affordable technology. I think $4.49 for a gallon of gas is pretty ugly looking compared to 65 cents worth of USA made electricity." Look for EVJerry as chances are that he's coming your way! For more information go to: http://spiritofdc.com/ http://www.eaaev.org/ http://www.lieaa.org
