My girlfriend was assigned to work in Eastern Europe last summer. We decided to meet in Paris by the end of October for the delivery of her new apartment she bought. She left Washington DC last August for her work assignment and I decided instead to go to Zurich, Switzerland to spend a month with old friends that I did see not for almost 20 years.  My first 3 weeks were excellent, visitng friends, dining and travelling around. The weather was perfect and I was very much enjoying my vacation.  On the forth week after travelling and feeling very tired and I miss the last tram then I decided to spend a night in a hostel in Helvetia Plaz right in the middle of Zurich. It was Sunday morning and I was supposed to take the TGV to Paris on Monday afternoon for Paris. Well, while I was sleeping early in the morning waiting for the breakfast at 6am, I saw someone entering my room that I fought was the cleaning gentleman. I saw him exiting then I checked my pocket and realized that my wallet was gone. I rush to the hallway but I saw noboday. I took the stairway to the front office and told the front office manager what just happened. I asked him if he saw someone exiting the building, he said no. I had every thing in my wallet, credit cards, debit card, some cash, my social security card, my health insurance card, GREEN CARD... Now there is no way I can come back to the US. We called the Swiss police who came quickly but it was too late. They took me to the station and showed me around 2000 pictures in the hope that I can recognize the thief...Now I need a police report that I have to bring to the US Embassy in Bern which is a 2 hours ride from Zurich.  It was Sunday. I had to wait until Monday and I was broke. I managed to call some friends who helped me with some money to get by. On Monday I took the train from Zurich to Bern. Honestly the US Embassy was very helpful. They told me that people when they come to Switzerland they relax and forget that thieves are everywhere even in one of the richest countries in the world. The Embassy wrote 2sealed  reports that I had to give to the airline company in order to  board the plane and the other to the Immigration at the port of entry here in the States. Now, I have to return immediately to the US to reprocess my papers. I was supposed to board the plane around 6am and stop in Toronto then in Washington DC.  The Swiss people did not trust the letter and wanted to double-check with the Embassy if the letter was authentic therefore I had to miss that fight because the Embassy opens around 8am. Well, I missed that flight. The next day I returned for the flight. They checked my bags and I was ready to return to the US. When the time to board the plane came, Canada Airline refused to take me because their immigration could not approve me to stop in Toronto. It was like trading a headach to an upset stomach... The only thing possible for them was to put me to a direct flight to Washington DC. Finally, United Airline took me on board and I was bound to the Land of Freedom. Imagine how Happy I was when the captain said that we will be landind in the US in 15 minutes! When I arrived in Dulles Airport, after presenting the sealed envelop, the Immigration Officer simply told me, Welcome back home son. That's was my vacation.  Can I say that the end justifies the mean.
