With gas and food prices on the rise a new trend has been
increasing amongst those who order out to eat, tip stiffing. These
people who leave the driver with no tip don't realize that they
rarely get any of the "delivery charge" assigned by the company.
Delivery Drivers get paid minimum wage and sometimes lower wage as
they are given tips to supplement their income. With tip stiffing
occurring drivers have less money coming home each day. Between
checks they depend on tips to fill their tanks to do their job.
Still with all of this in mind some people feel like they do not
need to tip the driver.
A new website has been created that will hopefully change
views on tipping. TipStiffers.com is a completely user generated
website that allows delivery drivers to mark houses that don't tip
on a map. Similar to the rottenneighbor.com concept the website is
completely made up of user map content with slight moderation done
by the webmaster.
The website does not give out any information about where the
driver works or their name. The same goes for the customer as the
only information displayed is the address and comments that are not
allowed to include the customer's name or information.
Webmaster Courtney Innes knows that there are people out
there that just "forget" to tip. Still she argues that forgetting
is such a burden right now to these drivers that it is
unacceptable. There is light though on the website for those
stiffers. If the same driver returns and gets a tip next time there
is a redeem option that will delete the marker with a code word
that the driver set up originally on the site. So hope is on the
horizon for those who change their minds about tipping.
What about waitresses and vallet guys? There is a section on
the site for them too. No map just a "Dear John" format letter that
they can rant out about their non tipping party that they served
for all night. No names disclosed here either but the name of the
place is ok.
For service there needs to be compensation and for diservice
to the driver there is now consequence.
