SAN LUIS VALLEY - The San Luis Valley experienced severe weather this past weekend including hail, funnel clouds and at least one tornado that touched down in the plains east of Mosca.

National Weather Service Spokesperson Pamela Evenson said she heard reports of golf-ball-sized hail in the Center area and even larger hailstones the size of tennis balls east of Mosca on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, the weather service received reliable reports of a tornado touching down about eight miles east of Mosca, Evenson said.

More than one Valley resident photographed the tornado which caused no damage, as it was nowhere near any residences.

Jack Fairbanks of Mosca, for example, photographed the funnel cloud as it formed and then touched down about 3:25 p.m. on Saturday. He estimated the tornado was about six miles east of Mosca southwest of the Sand Dunes. "The tornado touched down briefly and returned to the clouds," he said.

Fairbanks added that the rotation of the clouds continued for about another 30 minutes "spawning a couple of small funnels."

Area resident Tom Pavlovsky also photographed the Mosca-area funnel. He clocked it at 3:15 p.m. approximately three miles south and five miles east of Mosca. Pavlovsky observed gusty winds and hail up to 1-inch in diameter in Mosca and south of town near the sighting of the funnel cloud.

Mosca-Hooper Fire Chief Blaine Witherspoon also photographed the funnel and hail that was injurious to property in various portions of the Valley from the Mosca and Hooper area west to Center and Del Norte.

On Sunday, Aug. 17, in the afternoon rural Monte Vista area resident Pat Simpson videotaped multiple funnel clouds forming southeast of Monte Vista. Simpson said the funnels did not touch down but were distinctive in shape.

Evenson said the weather service also received reports of a tornado touching down near San Acacio. She said although tornado conditions are not common for the San Luis Valley, the storm system over the weekend created favorable conditions for the funnels to form in this area.
