You may need a drink for this one

I only drink very rarely, and never drink and drive. However, I do believe this country should be as FREE as possible. I also know we have limited resources and should focus on arresting and prosecuting true criminals. I believe whole heartedly that minimal drinking saves young adults from some trauma (accidents) and depression (alcoholism). You could argue that to save lives we should wait until age 25 to legally drink. Do you have any idea how many fewer accidents we'd have then?! And AA might actually have to beg for members after that! Okay, I'm only being facetious.

Let us think logically now. Those kinds of arguments, while valid, only prove that people at any age are reckless. The fact of the matter is that you're telling a kid fresh out of high school that they are now an adult. They can smoke cigarettes until their lungs are black, hold a job to support themselves, live on their own at college, drive a car, spend all of their money on lotto tickets, fight in the military around the world, and basically do anything they want. They just can't drink. And this is because research proves that it lessens road fatalities. If we really are going to allow them to function as adults in society, they should be able enjoy the adult benefits.

I support lowering the drinking age to 18 as it is in most of the world where there is a drinking age. It is ridiculous to have a legal drinking age of 21. I have been drinking once in a while since I was 16. I have never been addicted, never a binged, never driven drunk, and like most people, never abused any drugs. Laws for people who are repeatedly driving drunk need to be very strict and comprehensive to be sure people get the help they need and as a deterrent as the legal age is lowered to 18. I'll drink to the lower drinking age along with millions of others. The rest of this country may need to loosen up a little.
By the way, if this new legal age of 18 really proves detrimental over time the law can be switched back to age 21 at any time too. It just seems to be the time to try it out though.
