Conservative and Liberal branch from the same vine

The discussion (argument) about what's liberal and what is conservative has continued to be stupid and these primaries and elections are highlighting something that still doesn't make sense.
Republicans are viewed as conservative on social issues and capitalists on the economy. Democrats are viewed as generally liberal on social issues and socialists on the economy. The Conservatives want the government to stand out of the way of economic growth, let businesses move and grow independent of government interference and regulation. Conservatives have faith that the market, with the influence of "big business", will be responsible enough let the wealth "trickle down" and serve/feed society. This allows our economy to boom, grow and be healthy. On the other hand, Conservatives want the Goverment use its influence to shape the social, ethical and value based 'norm' our society to protect us from ourselves. Our social norms shouldn't be allowed to breathe without the influence of our government legislating morality.
Democrats, on the other hand, want the Government to take the stand that Conservatives use on social issues and apply those standards to the economy and business. Also, liberals want the government to take the Conservative's approach to the economy and apply them to social issues. Why does the liberal approach to business suddenly become conservative when it's applied to social issues?
Somehow, the democratic view of "life" is liberal because liberals have faith in people making choices for themselves but when the same tack is taken with business, its called "fiscal conservatism". When conservatives would like to use the government to regulate and legislate morality because of a distrust in society's ability to make the right choices without direction, that is social conservatism while that same approach when applied to business is called a "liberal agenda".
Politicians, and more specifically our government, needs to scrap these stigmatizing labels and simply return to the government's foundation. Handle interstate issues and stand at our foreign borders with a watchful eye on protecting us. Improve our standing in the world politically, economically and IF NECESSARY, use force. Liberal or Conservative aside, that's just the way it is. This labelling stuff is a shame and its the same double talking two faced mess that we have faced and have been force fed at every election and one of the main reasons people are just turned off all together.
