KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A male student has died after he was shot
by another male student at Central High School on Jacksboro Pike
shortly before school started Thursday morning.
Suspect
The shooting suspect was taken into custody six minutes after
the incident at 8:17 as he walked three blocks away on Doughty
Drive and a gun was taken from him. A sheriff's deputy spotted him.
The suspect's name hasn't been released. He's being
questioned at the police department.
Police haven't said what type of gun they recovered.
Victim
The 16-year-old victim was transferred to UT Medical Center
where he died. Police say they received confirmation of his death
at 8:57.
Shooting details
Police say the shooting happened at 8:11 a.m. in the
cafeteria and the two students involved knew each other and had a
previous argument. They describe the shooting as "not being
random."
Police say at least one shot was fired. Officers reached the
school two minutes after the shooting.
Some students were eating breakfast when the shooting
happened. The cafeteria is a place where students gather before
classes start.
A student who was in the cafeteria told 6 News he heard what
sounded like a thump or a pop and didn't realize there had been a
shooting. He said other students rushed to help the victim.
Another student said some people were running and screaming
right after the shooting.
Superintendent Jim McIntyre calls the shooting a "terrible
tragedy" and an "isolated incident."
Conditions at the school
The building is on lockdown and school has been canceled for
the day. Immediately after the shooting, students were told to go
to the nearest classroom and stay there until they were given more
information.
Students are being released slowly, a class at a time.
Students who have vehicles at the school are being released
first. They're allowed to text message on their cell phones, but
not make calls.
Parents who need to pick up their children should go to
Central Baptist Church of Fountain City, at 5364 North Broadway.
Call the church at 688-2421 for more information.
Police say parents can also go to Garden Drive at Rosebay to
pick up their children.
Some parents tell 6 News there's been confusion about whether
to pick up their kids at school or at the church and they're
frustrated about the process.
Grief counselors are on hand to help people deal with what
happened.
Other schools locked down
The superintendent says five other schools were on lockdown
for a time Thursday morning. Those schools are: Adrian Burnett
Elementary, Fountain City Elementary, Gresham Middle, Halls High
and Halls Middle.
The schools are in the area near Central High.
