Pensacola Beach- Gustav Update
Pensacola Sep 1, 2008
Photos of the Hurricane Gustav activity going on around the
Pensacola Beach. Spared the brunt of Hurricane Gustav's landfall
today, Pensacola Bay Area residents still are watching the skies as
several tornado warnings have been issued throughout the day.
Beaches at Pensacola Beach, there have been no reports of
major damage to infrastructure or rescues from the surf, which is
pounding the shore. About 100 or so people are walking up and down
the beach, watching the waves. Lifeguards are ordering them back
from the water with a megaphone when they venture too close or wade
too far out. The surf is clearly big and dangerous; about 400 yards
of white foam, with waves farther out that could be as high as 15
feet as seen from shore.
Lifeguards are patrolling the beach on four-wheel vehicles,
ordering people away from the waves. The surf is pounding and
dangerous: Waves are cresting at the level of the Pensacola Beach
Fishing Pier, which is 20 feet above sea level.
