iReport —

It was a beautiful night. The stars were shining bright and twinkling as if they had every reason in the universe to be excited and happy. Mavis and her husband were on their way home from the kids house after watching the famous Sarah Palin speak at the RNC. Mavis was driving, of course, and Grandpa was sitting shotgun, taking a little snooze while they were on the freeway. In the back seat was their granddaughter who wanted to spend the night at Grandma's and Grandpa's because they always let her have as much ice cream as she wanted and didn't even have to ask.

"Grandma, are you going to vote for Sarah Palin for president?"

Grandma chuckled. "No, Sweetie, she isn't running for president. She's running for vice-president. John McCain is the one who is running for president."

"Are you going to vote for him?"

"I don't know, Sweetie. I just don't know."

"Didn't you like Sarah's speech? Grandpa says she sure is a cute little thing."

Grandpa coughed and sat straight up as he suddenly came out of his snooze. "I said she was kinda cute....until she started talking."

"Sweetheart, your Grandpa likes any woman as long as she is silent. Right, Herb?" Mavis was laughing.

Grandpa got a serious look on his face. "You see, Darlin'. You can't listen too closely to what these speech makers say during election time."

"What do you mean, Grandpa?"

"Well, you know, both sides do too much blaming the other side for our problems. They want votes, so they say whatever they think they should say to get folks to vote for them. Every last one of 'em. It's called 'rhetoric'. They should all be ashamed of themselves the way they talk trash about each other. Every last one of 'em! Especially, this pretty gal, Sarah! They got her lying and talking bad about other folks she don't even know."

"Okay, Herb. Calm down. Go back to sleep."

" But, Mavis, honey. You know it's true. These political parties spend millions to talk bull and make all these promises and when it's all overwith, they never do what they say. Every last one of 'em!"

"Then, how are you supposed to figure out who to vote for?" the little girl asked.

Grandma smiled and said, "Well, Honey, even though this Republican convention reminds me of the final episode of 'The Last Comic Standing', I have to admit that I heard some things to think about. Not many, but a few, anyway. You know, as far as the presidential candidates, which is who we're voting for, not the vice-president, I kinda like them both. No, really. But, when it comes to deciding between the particular party I wish to be in the white house next year, I'm afraid to vote for the same one that is there now. That IS a scary thought. No matter what is said in all of these grand speeches at either convention, I think we need some new people running things."

"Why, Grandma?"

"Well, for one thing, America doesn't have too many good friends these days. And, I doubt that a McCain administration is going to be able to help there much. Make war first..talk later' is how they seem to think. It will be nice if your big brother comes home from Iraq in one piece. And, our economy needs help desperately. Since our current president, good old George W., was elected, our national economy has taken a major fall in many ways. So, you see, Honey, no matter how smart Sarah Palin talks, or how popular she is....Sweetheart? Are you listening?"

The little girl was fast asleep...in the back seat...and the stars were twinkling. But, Mavis kept talking...and talking...and talking.
