One of America's favorite student activists, Cristina Lara, has
engaged in smoking hookah--an activity that may be prohibited
within SADD.
Cristina, only a junior at Fair Lawn High School, is the
President of her school's Students Against Destructive Decisions
(SADD). Part of SADDs mission statement reads "to provide students
with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal
with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired
driving, and other destructive decisions."
Cristina, who turned 16 on September 4, was smoking hookah
underage. Most hookah bars in the United States require a minimum
age of 17 to smoke, or 18 to purchase the hookah itself. Although
an extremely small percentage of hookah bars allow 16 year olds to
smoke, this photo was taken before Cristina's birthday, making her
15 at the time.
"I work as hard as I can...I'm not your typical teenager
who's hanging out every weekend. Mostly on the weekends, I stay
home. I do homework. I read," the young leader stated in her
acceptance speech upon receiving the Brave Nation Young Activist
Award. She certainly was not home reading on the night this picture
was taken.
It is unknown whether or not she remain President of SADD.
Cristina has been nationally recognized as a young activist, and
she's currently working on her independent project/organization,
Cristina Lara Inc. The young feminist, who's website can be visited
at
www.cristinalara.com, is also a state finalist in the Miss
Teen New Jersey pageant. Hypocrisy? Maybe so. She has represented
today's youth as progressive and involved. Her actions, however,
defy what she stands for.
Cristina has not yet commented on this article. You can email
her at info@cristinalara.com to question her motives as an student
activist.
