Biography
BUY MY NEW BOOK: "PRIZEWINNING POLITICAL CARTOONS: 2008 Edition" on Amazon.com Born in Oakland City, Indiana, Dean Turnbloom has been drawing cartoons since his early days in elementary school, much to the annoyance of his teachers. His work was featured in his high school senior class magazine project entitled Kaleidoscope. Dean retired from the US Navy in 2004 as Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4) after serving over thirty years. Having traveled all over the world, and extensively in the Persian Gulf region, lends Dean’s work in cartooning a unique perspective. A freelance cartoonist making a go of self-syndication, Dean's work has been featured in USA Today. His cartoons are currently being published in five local San Diego area papers as well as in daily and weekly papers in Oklahoma, Kentucky, Indiana, Washington, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Colorado and in one international paper based in New York City. In addition to newspapers, Dean's work is a regular feature on both left and right web sites (Freepress.org and PatriotPost.US) - a testimony to his even-handedness, a rare quality in an editorial cartoonist. Dean was honored by the San Diego Press Club's "Excellence in Journalism" awards for the second year in a row with a third place award in editorial cartooning. In the Daily newspaper category, he was beaten by his own son, Lucas Turnbloom. A strong believer in the power of editorial cartoons to comment on and point out the foibles of society and its leaders, Dean tries to deliver an even-handed commentary through his art. He believes the combination of a well-drawn cartoon, coupled with an appropriate tag-line makes a more lasting impression than is possible by written word alone. Numerous well-known editorial cartoonists have reviewed Dean's cartoons and have given him favorable comments. When three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Conrad saw Dean’s work, he sent Dean an email in which he told Dean that he was “very impressed”. Dean and his wife of 31 years, Nanette, currently reside in southern California and have three children, a daughter-in-law and Fred & Gus, their dogs.
